Save your files in your personal folder (H: drive) on Aristipus

CAUTION: Be sure you see the H: or the "on Aristipus", because these identify the permanent folder on the server. When you log on there is a local folder created with your username, but it gets deleted when you log off. Saving things in that folder can cause many tears to flow.

You should save to your personal folder (and maybe to a floppy, too, for backup)
Files saved to the desktop or other locations on the local computer will not be kept.

Basic Information

You have a folder on our ACADEMIC domain server ("Aristipus"). It is available to you when you are logged into any computer in the computer lab or computer classrooms ( W007, CH116, CH117, CH213). You can create sub-folders within it, save, move, delete files, etc.

It is mapped as the "H:" drive when you logon, and is called something like <username> on aristipus/users.
Be sure you see the H: or "Aristipus", as insurance that you have not mistakenly gotten the local folder tagged with your username, because it will be deleted when you log off.

To access your personal folder, you must already be logged on using your own username and password. To protect your files, it is important to log off before you leave the computer.

in Windows Explorer: Find your own folder (H: drive, on Aristipus)
to move or copy files, etc.

  • To just see what's in it

  • To copy files from it to a floppy or from a floppy to it.

  • To copy files from other folder into it (like, from the class-files folder, etc.)

  • To create folders inside it to organize your files.

  • To double-click documents in it to open them in Word, Excel, etc.

Start Windows Explorer: On the "task Bar" (at the very bottom left of the normal Windows screen), right-click the "Start" button, then click "Explore"
Scroll down the left pane till you can see the drive <username> on 'Aristipus/users' (H:)

For example, if you are logged on as ablovett, then it would be
ablovett on 'aristipus/users' (H:)

CAUTION: Be sure you see the H: or the "on Aristipus", because these identify the permanent folder on the server. When you log on there is a local folder created with your username, but it gets deleted when you log off. Saving things in that folder can cause many tears to flow.

Next, In the left pane, click the drive " <username> on 'Aristipus/users' (H:)
In the right pane, you should now see the contents of your folder, (and it should be showing in the left pane, and look "open".)

Now, simply select your desired file and double click on it to open it.

Open and Save from Microsoft Applications
(Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)

Step-by-step for Saving:
You are in a new Word document you want to save.
If you want simply want to save your corrections to a document you have already created then all you have to click on the disk shape on the toolbar.

This will replace your document with the corrected one.

If you do not want to replace it then you will need to follow the below steps and title your document differently.

When saving a document that has never been saved before also follow the steps as stated below.

Click on  File, then  Save As
The save as window should appear.
Click the little triangle to drop down the list, and click " <username> on 'Aristipus/users' (H:)

If this is already selected skip to the next step.

Once you have selected this you will see your files listed.
Now, click in the box adjacent to file name and type in a title to your document.

The title should be worded, so as you can easily distinguish it amongst all of your other documents.

Now click on Save and you are done!

Or to open a pre-existing document: (If you have not selected your own folder as in the steps above, in your current session in Word, then the File Open process will be more like the steps above. If you have done so, they will be more like these:

In Word, click on File, then click on Open
Once you click on open the open window should pop up.
Next, you will need to scroll down to your folder:

If your user folder is already selected then skip to the next step.

Now, your documents will be listed.

Click on the desired document and click on open.

Or you can just double click on your document.

Congrats, you have opened your document!

Open and Save from Microsoft Applications
(Excel, Access, powerPoint, etc.)

These other Microsoft application work the same as Word, except that when you first open them, they are not set to the h: drive, so you first have to make that change.

Example: Open a file in Excel

From Excel, Do File | Open
See "personal" (or something else) to the right of "Look in". Click the little triangle at the right of that space to drop down a tree of locations.
Go down the items to find and click  "username on 'Aristipus/users' (H:)
From here on, the steps are like the ones for Word.

See the contents of your folder (if they are Excel documents).
