Interests, Activities, etc.--
I
enjoy music, both listening to it and making it--mainly classical and folk music. My
"real" instrument is trumpet, and I sometimes attempt recorder, tin whistle, and
concertina. I like to sing, and used to direct
the church choir at St. Peter's Episcopal
church.
I
occasionally get a bit of time to work with clay, throwing pots on my homemade potter's
wheel, between mowing the weeds, fixing things around the house, and other fun stuff like that.
I
have written a few poems (here's one), and expect to write more. I have ideas for a couple
of novels, and not enough time to put words on paper. Oh well -- everybody may
aspire to be a writer, but not all write.
Things
Peggy and I enjoy doing together include traveling, camping, sailing,
picnicking,
visiting with our kids and grandkids, playing trumpet and
baroque recorders, singing, vegetable gardening, reading,
and surfing the internet.
The Schreiner Connection--
My father, who taught Engineering at Schreiner
for 40 years, was
teaching here when I was born, so I grew up on this campus. We lived in several
locations on campus, most of which are no longer standing. My Junior High School
years were spent in Delaney Hall (the new dorm at that time!) and I practiced trumpet in
the garage out behind Delaney, because it was too much noise to make inside the dorm.
The Computer Connection--
Computers
have been my fascination since forever. My first hands-on programming experience
came when the Apple II first appeared, and I taught myself Applesoft BASIC, writing short
programs to use with my students in Physics and Math classes.
Next
came some introductory experience with 6502 assembly language, Pascal, and C+. When
Windows appeared, we got a PC, later moving up to Windows 95 and the Office suite, after
an in-between acquaintance with WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. At the time, Peggy was
teaching in Schreiner's Nursing Program, and we did all her exams and handouts on the
computer. Very handy! On the hardware side, I went through several upgrades,
buying new hard drives, mother boards, sound cards, etc. and rebuilding the computer
myself.
My
love of computers and of music came together when I got a sound card, a MIDI keyboard, and
MusicTime notation software. I've used this combination to compose, arrange, transpose
and print music, both for trumpet descants and church choir anthems.
Meanwhile,
the Internet came along, and I got hooked! I had been seeking a way to get dial-up
access, and when KTC first started providing it, I signed right up, and immediately became
a life-long internet junkie.
Sometime
after that, I accepted a part-time position at Schreiner, teaching one section of
the introductory computer course (at that time it was based on Microsoft
Works), which I did for one Spring Term and one Summer Term. Then I was hired in the
Schreiner Computer Lab, and here I can still be found, sitting in the corner staring at a
computer screen!
