Info for New Folks (and reminder for the rest of us)

Many kinds of computer-related resources are available to you at Schreiner.
The brief summary below has links to more detailed information dispersed throughout our website.

  • As a part of Orientation for New Students at Schreiner you receive a sheet with your Student ID Number, your Logon id for e-mail and the Academic network, and your password. It also gives Internet addresses for your web-based Schreiner e-mail, and for "Schreiner One".

    • E-mail and Academic logon: use your logon id, (possibly with campus\ before it --like campus\RMNixon) and password.

    • Schreiner One logon: use your id number (like 84692) and password

  • Schreiner One is our Student Information System, used by some faculty to exchange coursework information with students. You will receive a separate page with details.

  • There are computers available to you on campus in several places. They run only "our" software, not yours. (The CAMPUS domain and wireless networks do not connect to each other.)

    • Student-accessible computers that can log onto the CAMPUS domain:

      • Dickey 112 Open Computer Lab -- includes late evening hours

      • Also in Dickey: TLC tutoring (downstairs) and LSS tutoring (upstairs)

      • Computers on the Sun Porch in Logan Library -- also open weekends

      • Moody 212 special lab -- available for Science classwork, etc.

      • Computer Classrooms Weir 007, CH 117, etc for scheduled computer classes, and the Graphic Arts Lab in CH 213

      • Student printing on this network is "charged" against your $5.00 per semester free allowance. Deposit more in Dickey 112 if you run low.

    • On the wireless "STUDENT" network (provides Internet access)

      • Various laptops available in classes and for checkout (wireless)

      • Internet kiosks in the Corner Pocket.

      • Wireless access for your own personal computer--see below

  • Special prices on Microsoft Office and Windows -- $10 for each of the following, with your ID card, at the Library circulation desk:

    • For Windows users: Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise (includes Access, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, Word), and Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (operating system) are available to Schreiner students for $10 each at the Library circulation desk. [Office on DVD only -- see note below]
    • For MAC users: Microsoft Office MAC 2008 is available to Schreiner students for $10 at the Library circulation desk. [Office on DVD only -- see note below]
    • Also for Windows users, McAfee antivirus software is available free to Schreiner students (in the Computer Lab, Dickey 112).
    • If you want wireless access to the Internet, click here to learn how to prepare your computer.
Note: Office is now available only on DVD (as opposed to CDs). If your computer does not have a drive that will read DVDs, contact the Technology help desk to arrange for us to copy your DVD onto your hard drive so that you can install the software.

Free McAfee Antivirus (Windows only)-- on CD in the Computer Lab, or download it. [details]

  • Student Tech Support -- help for students resident on campus, from our Tech department

    • We offer help as needed with setting up wireless connection to the student network, connecting peripherals (printers, etc.) to your computer, settings and procedures for McAfee antivirus, Windows firewall and pop-up blocker settings, etc.

    • To get help, phone x344 or e-mail TechHelp@schreiner.edu (Expect a callback to finalize arrangements).

    • This is voluntary, "if we can" type help. We solve the problem if we can, but make no guarantees. Especially, we make no promise to get your computer working if it quits.

  • The Student Network -- Internet Access by wireless

    • Schreiner wireless coverage map

    • To get access (get or register wireless NIC, etc.)—come to Dickey 112 Lab

      • Normal wireless hours Mon-Thur 8:00-4:00, Fri 8:00-2:00
      • We can issue you a wireless device belonging to Schreiner, or register your own wireless device (if you have one, built-in or plugged in) to access our wireless network. (see below if you have your own)

      • Borrow a (free) McAfee Antivirus CD and prepare your computer for network access. You are required to maintain your computer in a secure condition regarding Windows updates and AntiVirus software.

      • Check out an SU NIC (or register your own) and borrow a driver CD.

    • Complete your network connection, or ask for help (x344).

  • To get help if you have a problem with your Internet access:

    • x344 or e-mail TechHelp@schreiner.edu for actual help.

To register your own wireless, we need the "MAC address"--aka "Physical Address"--of your wireless network adapter. If it's a laptop, you can bring it to the Computer Lab and we can figure out the MAC address for you, or on any Windows computer you can follow these steps:
  • Depending on what version of Windows, try:
    • Windows XP etc.: Click the Start button and click “Run”
    • Windows Vista: Click the button that "would have been Start if they had given it a name", then the cursor will appear in the space on the line above it.
  • Type “cmd” (without the quotes) and tap <Enter> This should open a DOS window, aka command prompt window.
  • Type “ipconfig /all” (without the quotes)--there is a space between the g and the / --and tap <Enter>
  • Read through the headings on the sections and find the one that says Wireless in the heading. The “Physical Address” under the Wireless LAN section is six pairs of number/letters, separated by hyphens, like 00‑00‑2D‑2E‑64‑CA or some such. Be sure you get the one for WIRELESS, if your computer has a regular Ethernet and a wireless. You may have to scroll up to see it--in Vista you are almost sure to have to scroll up.
  • On a MAC, the number you need (same appearance as above) is called the Airport Address. To find it, click the apple in the upper left, come down and click "System Properties". Click the "Network" icon a bit below the center. Click the "Configure" button, and look for the Airport address.
